Letter from the President

For the SMPS Research Triangle Chapter, 2018–2019 is the “Year of the Volunteer!” When I first joined the chapter in Fall 2014, I jumped right on the volunteer train as a member of the Programs Committee. Although I was clueless at first as to how to pick a crowd-pleasing speaker or select catering options for an audience of 60, I listened to my leaders and peers and quickly learned the ropes. The following year, I served on the committee again, but this time, felt more comfortable, recognized more faces, and was inspired to contribute any way possible. Now, I’m excited to volunteer as your chapter President!

I firmly believe that SMPS members do not truly experience the full benefits of membership until they volunteer for the organization in some capacity. As a committee member, you meet new faces from the A/E/C industry at monthly committee meetings. As a committee director, you build leadership skills and a solid industry network. As a board member, you become invested in improving the organization and build lifelong relationships with your colleagues. As a volunteer, you walk into a monthly program and recognize true friends among your growing network and find that numerous doors open for you and your career!

I hope if you are not a current volunteer, you reach out to me or any member of the 2018–2019 Board to learn about our numerous volunteer opportunities and become engaged and involved in the SMPS Research Triangle Chapter. Each and every member can find a unique way to contribute to our mission of advocating for, educating, and connecting leaders in the building industry. I’m looking forward to a great year ahead—thank you for volunteering your time and energy to make our chapter the best it can be!
