Join us as SMPS Research Triangle tours the historic renovation of Wiley Elementary School! Thanks to Gilbane Building Company, attendees will get a sneak peek of the new building addition and the renovated Wiley School building, originally built in 1923.

Desperately in need of upgrades and renovations, the school, which has served students continuously through the Depression, Desegregation, two World Wars, the Vietnam War, and countless other events in our history, will honor the past while ushering in a new generation of children. Previously, the campus was made up of numerous, disconnected buildings, which made accessibility to classrooms and cafeteria hazardous for students. During the tour you will see how the architect worked with new and existing buildings to make getting around the school safer and easier for students. Mete Gurel of Gurel Architecture designed the renovation and new addition to the school. Mete was also the architect on all previous additions and renovations to the building. He and the original architect, Christopher Gadsden Sayre are the only two architects to have ever worked on Wiley Magnet Elementary School in its nearly 100-year history.

This is an active jobsite, therefore, appropriate PPE (hard hats, long pants, vests or fluorescent colored shirts, boots or hard-sole shoes and protective eyewear) is required. Please bring your own safety gear if you have it, we only have a limited number of hard hats, protective eyewear, and vests available for use. It is imperative that sturdy boots are worn, as the site surrounding the buildings is very rocky.

Participants should park along the street on College Place near the construction entrance. Please make sure you have your sturdy footwear on prior to entering the site. We will meet at the job trailer and you can put on the rest of your PPE there.

No refund is due if cancellation occurs within 24 hours of the event

No walk-ins will be permitted, and this event is limited to 50 attendees.
