Join us for an exciting panel of female leaders in the A/E/C industry. What paths led them to this industry and their successful careers? What tips do they have for honing your leadership skills? No matter who you are or where you are in your career, bring your questions and soak up the wisdom of these industry leaders.


Theresa Leahey, Director of Business Development – Affiliated Engineers

Theresa Leahey is the Director of Business Development for the Chapel Hill office of Affiliated Engineers, a national, 650-person, multi-office consulting MEP/Technology engineering firm. Theresa has worked in the building industry for the past 35 years. She has worked with engineering, architecture, interior design and general construction companies in marketing and business development roles. She just celebrated her 17-year anniversary with AEI. Theresa has a BFA degree in Industrial Design from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has been a member of SMPS since 1984 and was the founding President of the SMPS Pittsburgh Chapter in 1988. She and her family relocated to Raleigh from Pittsburgh in 2000. While she, her husband and two adult children are still avid Steelers fans, they have no intention of leaving North Carolina any time soon.


Zena Howard, Managing Director, NC Practice – Perkins + Will

Zena Howard is a Principal and Shareholder with the global architecture and design firm Perkins+Will. Previously, Zena joined The Freelon Group in 2003, rising from Associate to Associate Principal by 2010, advancing to the level of Principal and Owner in 2012. In 2014, The Freelon Group joined forces with Perkins+Will where Zena continues her leadership as Managing Director of the North Carolina practice and as a founding member of the firm’s global Diversity + Inclusion Council. Zena has more than 20 years of experience as an architect and project leader with a career focused on private and public institutions, museum and cultural facilities, libraries, and higher education facilities. Zena is a native of North Carolina and earned her undergraduate degree in Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1988. Prior to returning to North Carolina in 2003, she worked with firms in Richmond, Virginia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Cara Greening, Director of Business Development – BridgePoint Construction

Cara Greening is the Director of Business Development for BridgePoint, a woman-owned construction company headquartered in Durham. BridgePoint, ranked #12 in the TBJ’s Fast 50 in 2016, specializes in urban re-use projects such as American Underground and office build-outs. Known for its quality craftsmanship, BridgePoint also constructed the luxurious boutique hotel, the Mayton Inn. In addition to General Contracting, BridgePoint has two other divisions; Civil – a turnkey site work company and Construction Services – an Owner’s Agent company. Cara has had a diverse career, as she is a former teacher for WCPSS and spent a decade in marketing/business development at Clancy & Theys Construction Company. Cara has been a member of SMPS for 10 years. She is an avid long-distance runner, having completed the Umstead 100 Endurance Run and over 25 marathons.

Terri Hall, President – Clark Nexsen

As President of Clark Nexsen, Terri is responsible for providing executive leadership for a fully integrated architecture and engineering firm with nearly 400 employees, 10 offices, and a global reputation for excellence. Her leadership style reflects her belief in the importance of collaboration in developing innovative solutions to the toughest challenges facing our world today. A founding member of the firm’s Raleigh office, Terri managed the rapid growth of this location and became the firm’s first female board member in 2012. Additionally, she has served on the HUB Advisory Board to UNC Chapel Hill and is a graduate of the Leadership North Carolina class of 2012. Terri is part of Clark Nexsen’s senior management team, which includes their executive suite and 14 member board. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University and has recently been appointed to ODU’s Educational Foundation Board of Trustees.

Sallyann Hulick, Chief Marketing Officer – BSA Lifestructures

As Chief Marketing Officer, Sallyann oversees and directs marketing for the firm and all BSA LifeStructures offices. She offers business insight and key decision-making qualities for the firm’s marketing and branding strategy. Having accumulated more than 20 years of experience, Sallyann is committed to creating and leading the firm to fully utilize branding, talent, and expertise to drive business growth. She is passionate about developing talent through mentoring and coaching. Her expertise lies in strategy development, leadership, branding, and profitability.
